History of Quality
Kenya Wine Agencies Limited was incorporated in May 1969 as a Government Agency under the Companies Act (Cap. 486) as a joint venture between the Government of Kenya through the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) and private
investor with the Government retaining majority shareholding.
The objective was to provide a vehicle to move the importation and distribution of wines and spirits away from the domination of
foreign owned companies and enable indigenous Kenyans to participate significantly in this sector. Additionally, KWAL pioneered the production of wine in Kenya establishing the Country’s first commercial winery in 1982.
In November 2012 & February 2013, the Government of Kenya (GOK), by a Cabinet resolution and subsequent approval of Parliament mandated Privatization Commission to offer 26% of its shareholding of KWAL to a strategic investor in a phased restricting of KWAL. On 18th December 2014, after 17 years of business partnership with KWAL, Distell became a shareholder of KWAL with 26% shareholding making Kenya’s oldest wines and spirits maker a private company; Distell is a world renowned South African company and is Africa’s leading producer and marketer of spirits, fine wines, ciders, and ready to drinks.
