Having being established as a Government Agency in 1969, KWAL pioneered the wine industry in Kenya, establishing the country’s first commercial winery in 1982.
After 17 years of business partnership with KWAL, Distell Ltd. (SA) became a shareholder in KWAL with 26% shareholding making Kenya’s oldest Wine Maker a private company in December 2014.
Currently, Distell has an acquisition of 55.37% shareholding of KWAL. Distell is a world renowned South African Company and is Africa’s leading producer and marketer of spirits, fine wines, ciders and ready-to-drinks (RTDs). The other shareholder is Kenya Development Corporation (KDC) with 43.77% shareholding. KDC was established in 1954; KDC has over 60 years of experience and stability in promoting projects that create wealth and jobs for Kenyans in diverse sectors of the economy. The balance of shareholding is shared amongst a few other investors.
